Northwest Airlines flew for over 70 years until it was merged into Delta Airlines. In the 1940s, Northwest began flying to Japan and marketed itself as Northwest Orient. It kept "Orient" as part of its name until it merged with Republic Airlines in 1986. From then on it went by Northwest Airlines.
